Sub-Cultures

The Old Folk - were in this area before anyone else came along, they live in small groups within mainstream society but mainly I the Great lake States area. They have assimilated many of the behavioural patterns of their neighbours, but still cling to their old nature worshipping religion. Many yearn for the old days, but can't quite get their act together to go out and get it. Their gods are selected from the American Indian Mythos (Raven, Coyote, Heng, Horotu and Snake Man). A specific priesthood is described. This people have lost their own language and all speak Norse, the local common tongue.

The Old Celts - The first wave of Celts to reach the area, who were eventually displaced by a second wave of Celtic immigration. There are still pockets of Old Celts living their traditional lifestyle in the Galinia area. They are wilder and less civilised that the rest of the Celts. Their gods are drawn from the 1st edition legends and lore and their priests are all 1st edition Druids. The Old Celts speak Gaelic, an older form of the Celtic spoken by the rest of the Celts, the two groups can understand each other, but each considers the other to have a strange way of speaking, there is no written form of Gaelic. Few members of this people can speak common.

The Celts - The second wave of Celts that settled the area and created the Old Kingdom of Greater Hann. They are more civilised than the Old Celts, whom they replaced. Their influence is waning, and they are gradually being replaced in positions of authority by the Norse mercenaries they hired to help protect their kingdom. They worship the Celtic gods from the 2nd edition legends and lore, their priest are 2nd edition Druids, speciality priests and Druidic bards. The Celts speak Celtic at home and within their own community, although most can also speak Norse, the common tongue. There is no written form of Celtic.

The Norse - Originally came into the area as mercenaries to help the Celts protect Greater Hann from the monster hordes, but stayed and settled. They now supply many of the leaders of the area. Their gods are derived from the 2nd edition Legends and Lore and there are speciality priestshoods for Odin, Thor, Heimdall, and Tyr, there is also a generic priesthood for other priests of other gods and a specific priest hood for Frey, which is suitable for Elves and half-Elves. They have spread so widely that that their language has become the common tongue, it is also the main written language of the area.

Zacharan - The Grand Caliphate of Zachara conquered both the Far Coast and Great Lake States and held them for a while. These states were eventually liberated with help from the Wangate Empire, but a number of Zacharans decided to stay behind under the new regime. They are strongest in Bime, Jekleal, and The Razadi Islands although there is a small settlement in Galinia. They follow the enlightened gods of Zachara, although pragmatic priests of the Temple of Ten Thousand Gods, the Hakima and Mystic kits are most common priest types. Most Zacharans speak Midani, but they nearly all speak Norse as well. Midani is recognised as one of the 'learned' languages, in which books and treatise are written.

The Brothers of the Way - There is a cult that worships Ptah in his capacity of Opener of the Ways from the 1st edition Legends and Lore. These worshipers don't really form a separate culture group as they come from all backgrounds and walks of life. The one thing the have in common is a belief that travel fetches them closer to their god. There is a standard priesthood and multi-class rules for humans who only want to acquire limited priest skills. This group all speaks Norse as their main language.

Gypsies - There are a small number of travelling folk who wander the paths and the byways of the land, making their living as entertainers and itinerant workers. They have a different view on ownership to the rest of the peoples and often do not worship any recognised gods. Not very much is known about then yet.

Other Races - There are small pockets of Elves (some of whom worship the Norse god Frey), Halflings, Gnomes and Dwarves. These groups conform fairly well to the descriptions given in The Complete Book series. Each of these races speaks their own racial tongue, although there are different dialects within each languages, they can generally understand their cousins.

There are also a number of Half-Orcs although they don't form a specific culture group, but try and fit in wherever they can. This group speak the language of their of the culture group the live with, and often speak the common tongue as well.
