73 Closing the Chapter

By JohnB
[Edit]

Richard Briganda presses Elsbeth and Rolf for more information about the giant and the previous day's confrontation. Finally he signals that the meal is finished and signals to his servants who rush out with armour and weapons befitting his station. You notice that Augustus is doing the same and men are strapping themselves properly into their armour and clearing their weapons.

Moving outside everybody seems to split into 5 groups.

There are the Celtic warriors who are forming up with Segovax at their head. There are perhaps 10-12 men armed with shield and spear - but there are half dozen, with the look of veteran warriors, who are much better armed.

The same is true of the Galinian Norse who line up behind Jen Jensen. Their arms and armour are very similar, if it weren't for the differences in costume it would be difficult to tell them apart.

Augustuses Angasan party seems similar, until you notice his personal guards are armed with the wicked looking axes, that are the badges of their station. It is also slightly smaller than the other two groups but still numbers about 15 people. Forkbeard and his squires join a bit late, and he confers briefly with Augustus. The pair of them look across to Madelyn for a moment or two and then continue with their preparations.

A fourth group, under Greybeard, is deployed to ensure the safety of the ships and camp.

Seeing the ships safe Flower and Zona, as well as a few other non-combatants, form together in a last group with the clear intention of watching the outcome of things, but trying to keep themselves out of harms way.

Pick your groups folks :)

--------------------

The confrontation is over very quickly - rather than attack immediately, as you might have expected, Briganda stands his little army and advances towards the fortification, accompanied by Augustus, Jensen and Segovax and shouts for the giant to come out and speak with him.

The giant eventually does come out with his club over his shoulder and listens to Briganda as he speaks to him. You cannot hear clearly, but occasional parts of the discussion come to you.

A few phases like "Settle here" "many humans disturbing you" "Land of my forbears" "Compensation" make it as far as you...

Suddenly the giant spits on his hand and holds it out to Briganda - who takes it and shakes it. Although it looks quite strange as he can only actually grasp a couple of the giant's large fingers in his much smaller hand. Still a deal is made and sealed.

The giant stands watching as Briganda and his parley party return to you with smiles on their faces. Your little army is ordered to about face and march back to the camp. Is it possible that you have won without a blow being struck?

Striding up to one of the earth mounds Briganda leaps to the top and invites you all to gather around. Grinning all over his face he waves you all around and says,

"After I spoke to Manna mac Lanna mac Lin, that's the giant's name by the way, he decided to build a new home on the Lone Sea Rock. Later when he has chosen the site we will help him with timber and rock for his home and make sure he is not disturbed too much. He will be leaving to start his search in the next few days."

The more observant among you notice, however, that Jensen is setting a couple of people to watch out towards the giant's house and another couple as general outlooks.

"But now we have got this far, we have completed our goal of exploring the coastal path and proved that merchants and traders can use it. " He nods his head towards Kerim.

" And for that I thank my friends and loyal retainers here" he seems to encompass the whole party as he waves his arm.

"Indeed, Rolf Leifson," waving Rolf to the front, "You have been my captain in this and guided your small force along the path to meet us, overcoming many trials and tribulations along the way. For this I thank you, and award you the Rank of Squire within the Order of the Sword Reforged, the new name for the Civalric Order of the State of Galinia. Indeed the state will be recognised by its symbol of a reforged sword set against a red ground. Welcome Rolf as the first new member of the new order."

As you look around you notice that Jen Jensen, Segovax and a number of the other senior figures are wearing a small silver, sword shaped, brooch with a mark across the blade indicating the reforging. As the crowd applauds and cheers for Rolf, Briganda holds his hands up and calls for silence.

"Further more, as you have discharged your duties well, I confirm on to you the title of Constable, with the ranks and privileges pursuant to it, and charge you to develop the coast route until it is completely safe for travellers."

He presents Rolf with a Reforged Sword brooch, and a large gold arm ring, which a servant suddenly appears holding at his side. Then he stands back slightly to let the crown cheer and applaud Rolf. Almost immediately Jen Jensen and many of the other Norse men are over clapping Rolf on the back and wishing him well.

Letting that run for a few moments, Richard Briganda calls things to order again. "Elsbeth Marva Treverii, where are you? Step forward...." and Elsbeth suddenly finds Segovax's hand more firmly on hers pushing her forward towards the limelight, a smile in his eyes.

"Ah, Elsbeth" Says Briganda as he spots her. "In recognition of your role, and that which your family" he nods towards both Segovax and Edwy, "has played, in clearing this path I appoint you, too, to the rank of Squire in the order of the Sword Reforged. And can I say how delightful it will be to have such a beautiful companion at our gatherings in future."

He bows very slightly, as a servant hurries from the crowd to stand by Elsbeth with both the Sword Reforged brooch and a gold arm band, the match of the one given to Rolf. Segovax, presents her formally with both the brooch and arm ring, as is his right.

Again he lets Elsbeth have her moment of triumph before continuing. "While many of the rest of you are not citizens of Galinia, I would recognise you as well, although in some cases that privilege falls to other rather than myself." he says as he nods towards Forkbeard and Augustus.

"Mandrake Underroot, I have heard of your temperance and even-handedness, and I have also heard of your story telling. Indeed the people of Mistaton are still talking about the night the Dogheads visited their inn. I would have you close to me and make use of you neutrality. If you will, I shall appoint you Herald to the state of Galinia."

Those of you closest can see the surprise in the eyes and demeanour of both Jensen and Segovax, as if they had not been expecting that.

"Yes, I think you would balance the needs of all of my retainers and communities." He smiles at both Segovax and Jensen, as if he has somehow put one over on them. "And indeed I would like the opportunity to speak with your strange companion, whom I hear is cleverer, yet, than Greybeard's famous Parrot, Jolly."

Again he pause for a while to allow Mandrake to respond and get the congratulations of his companions.

"Peter Gasgano, for a man who was first a farmer and then a clerk it has taken great courage for you to undertake this mission. However I hear from the people of Mistaton that you have good ideas, and that you have helped them. I also hear from Rolf that you did not flinch from your duties in the fight with the doghead. If you will, I shall appoint you as my librarian, with responsibility for cataloguing those texts I own and writing others that will inform travellers and settlers to my lands."

Again there is a slight pause before he continues.

"Kerim the merchant, you have travelled a route that no other merchant has travelled for generations. For this you shall have the trading privileges that promised to your family before this expedition. You will have tax rates favourable to you, by 2% of the value, for all trade that you conduct between the villages of Dincaoc, through Mistaton and the swamplands to the settlement I shall build just beyond there."

Again he pauses slightly.

"Callum mac Aonghas, there is nothing that i have that will make a suitable gift to you. However you have the freedom of Galinia, and the new Tas Bardon we shall build and you have my thanks and gratitude. And I shall ensure that your name and deeds are sung in verse far from this land. I shall commission a bard to write of your travels to join us, and of your exploits whilst helping Rolf. Later, however, I might ask you to be my emissary to your people, when we are ready to drive the dogheads from their lands as well."

Yet another slight pause.

"Madelyn Thorne-Black, my thanks go to you. And to your order I have allowed the right to build a small chapter house on my lands. I trust they will reward you well for the assistance you have rendered me, and to the people of Galinia."

At which point he looks across to Forkbeard and Augustus again.

"There are also those who have travelled part way along this path - either stopping early or joining part way through - each of you also have my thanks for travelling that road, even if inadvertently, and helping establish its safety. There will be a tangible sign of my thanks later."

"There is also one who died in my service opening this path. He was not known to me personally, and we drunk his health earlier, but I wish to have his name remembered as a hero of this path.

Segovax - you will take a force to the ruins when the body of Aenis lies buried. There you will establish a fortified village to defend the path and you may, if you wish, populate that village with refugees from the recent wars. You will call the village DinAenis, in memory of that fine hero.

Edwy you will do the same at the point inland from Dincaoc at the pint where the inland path meets the path here. Again you may choose your own people to command the village and use refugees of your choice to populate it. Find a suitable name for it as well. "

Here he looks significantly at Edwy. Many of you become aware of the discomfort of Jensen and the Norse leaders at this point, and the superior smiles of Segovax and Edwy.

"My Lord Forkbeard, if you would be so good as to have you order build its house at the next junction along that path, they will be but a day's travel from the new town that I intend to build here at Tas Bardon.

Forkbeard looks surprised by the speed that things are moving and that he is being requested to build so quickly and in such a specific place.

"We will establish here," he waves his hand around particularly out towards the loch, "a new capital for Galinia that will be our jewel. We will have a library and a college of heralds and perhaps even a place of learning - but not straight away. We will start by building a village here, based on Manna's abode there." he says pointing to the giant's house.

"And we will build another on the other side of the Loch, with a ferry running between them. And I shall build my residence at the old Tas Bardon halls over there on Nome Island." Says he pointing to the island in the loch.

"Jen, you and your colleagues there," indicating the Norse leaders, "will help me in this, calling for people to help build these villages from those of our cousins who were dispossessed during the recent war. Indeed Jen, I think it is probably time for you to see about founding another village along that wild coast of yours as well."

At this the Norsemen start looking happier, realising they are getting more Norse than Celtic villages - and Segovax and Edwy's great joy diminishes a bit. Still both camps seem fairly happy now...

"And together, we will all lead Galinia, and her peoples, into a new a great new dawn.

He finishes off to great cheers from all around, as he leaves the high ground indicating that Forkbeard should take his place.

Still Continuing

By JohnB
[Edit]

Slowly Forkbeard climbs the mound, his face set in a mask of seriousness, that looks slightly incongruous after such a rousing speech. Signing to his squires, they lead Madelyn forward to the top of the mound. Strangely, they too seem remarkably serious for a ceremony to honour one of their own.

When Madelyn reaches the top, Forkbeard speaks in a loud voice. "Before you stands Madelyn Thorne-Black, a candidate of the Order of the Saga, who has recently been assigned a duty to assist Richard Briganda, Earl of Galinia, and his agents, in clearing the Galinian Coastal Path."

You realise from the gravity of his tones and his phrasing that something is not right. The generally happy buzz that has been going around gradually stills as everyone turns to listen more closely to these formal words. Looking to Madelyn you see that she is using all her strength and will power to hold her self erect and passive, indeed it looks to be a titanic struggle for her.

"During this duty Madelyn Thorne-Black, disregarded the code of conduct required of all members of The Order of the Saga. And, as such, disgraced herself in the eyes of the order and her peers. Her transgression was severe and I apologise to The Earl of Galinia, on behalf of The Order, for sending one with such limited control to assist him."

He nods gravely to Richard Briganda, who stands absolutely impassively. Madelyn forces herself to stifle another sob and starts to go red.

"Madelyn Thorne-Black, killed a dog head enemy in cold blood by strangling it with a rope, after it had passed itself into her custody as a prisoner. That is not acceptable behaviour for a member of the Order of the Saga, and therefore Madelyn Thorne-Black's candidacy within the Order is rescinded and her Oath retracted."

He pauses for a moment, but then speaks again silencing the whispering that has started.

"However, Madelyn Thorne-Black, has shown true remorse for this act and bought the matter to my attention at the earliest opportunity. Until that time she behaved impeccably within the strictures of the order and this mitigates her offence, to some extent.

Madelyn Thorne-Black, you may choose to take penance here from me, and completion of that penance will allow you to redeem your oath to the order. However, the penance will be severe. You could choose to renounce your oath and leave here without the protection of the order. Which do you choose?"

You can see Madelyn's lips move but nothing seems to come out then suddenly in a breaking but strong voice she calls, "I choose the penance" and it is clear that she has used almost the last reserves of her self control to make that statement.

Nodding encouragingly Forkbeard continues.

"Madelyn Thorne-Black your penance will be in three parts.

For the first you must recognise and consider the hurt done to the Doghead. Until this penance is completed you will wear a black rag band around your head or helm, in remembrance of the doghead that you slew. You will further spend at least one hour per day, on top of your normal devotions, considering the difference between a betrayed death by strangling and a proper, clean, and honourable death in combat.

For the second part, you must make recompense to both the order and the Earl of Galinia, for the inappropriateness of your behaviour during your last duty. You will, therefore, labour at the tasks of helping create Galinia, and assist in establishing and securing paths while wearing the black rag of your remembrance.

For the last part, you will redeem you transgression against the gods and their honour. You will, at an appropriate time, kill the doghead enemies of Galinia in honourable combat.

When you have completed these tasks, your oath to the order will be redeemed.

Madelyn Thorne-Black, do you accept and recognise this penance?"

Disgraced

[Edit]

Madelyn is completely unawares to the preparation of battle, and is not disturbed until she hears the congregation cheering and clapping. Making the sign of the Order she stands and walks slowly down to where the congregation have gathered.

She stands on the outskirts watching the proceedings, smiling inwardly at the rewards offered to Rolf an Elsbeth, and a feeling of pride washes over her as her companions are each named and honoured one by one.

It is not until Forkbeard’s squires come for her that her own situation wipes the small smile from her face. I must be strong she thinks to herself, I have brought this unto myself and deserve nothing less. She lets the squires lead her to the top of the mound, and takes her place next to Forkbeard.

"Madelyn Thorne-Black, do you accept and recognise this penance?"

With tears rolling down her face, she summons the words required "I accept and recognise this penance". She puts one knee to the ground enabling the squire to tie the black cloth around her head.

Forkbeard watches the rag tied around her head, and then closes his eyes and prays quietly for a second or two. Then he collects his squires with his eyes, and leads them down the side of the earthworks and away from Madelyn.

They move away from the crowd, outside the camp where he sits in private, his squires making sure he keeps his privacy.

Slowly the crowd, stunned by what they have just seen, start to murmur again.

Madelyn is left on her knees on top of the mound ...

Enoblement of Rolf

By Brad
who plays Rolf
[Edit]

As the warriors form up, Rolf moves to rejoin his Norse brethern under the flag of Jen Jensen. As Richard and the other nobles step forth, Rolf angles for a clear shot. Though an arrow is notched, he keeps the bow held low so as not to undermine the peace. Though he trembles with fear of what those giant hands might do to his liege, Rolf can't help but feel admiration for the man. What power could keep the giant from slaying Richard if he decides to play false. But the pact is made and Richard shares the happy news with the rest.

Rolf cheers, knowing that peace is only possible due to his decision the day before. It'd been tough to keep his temper in check, but now it seems the decision was the right one. But he approves of Jen's placing of watchers.

Rolf is taken by surprise as Richard singles him out and he bows low as the gracious words of Richard pour over him. He strives for seriousness, but his lips twitch slightly at the praise. He gasps as Richard announces his entry into the Order of the Sword Reforged. His chest puffs out as the brooch is pinned on his chest and the armband is presented. Not only a squire and knight, but a constable and trusted member of Richards court.

He's buffeted by his kinsmen, his fellow Norsemen. Feeling a little unsteady, as much from the shock as by the back thumping of his fellows, Rolf again bows to Richard, not trusting his voice to speak. He barely manages to focus on the speeches regarding the rest of his companions.

And then comes the speech of Forkbeard, who speaks of Madelyn's failure. His face reddens. Madelyn had been nothing but a brave a worthy companion. Holding himself in check only barely, he listens as the man speaks of the slaying of the doghead in the swamp. Rolf's eyes harden as he looks at Madelyn, waiting for her to call the man liar. But she meekly accepts the penance demanded by Forkbeard. Rolf's eyes turn inward, trying to find the path through his confusion.

Seeing Madelyn being left alone atop the rise, Rolf pushes through the crowd and stands next to his friend, the woman who's image had worked it's way into his heart. "Madelyn," he says quietly, "Is it true? Did you slay that doghead back in the swamp?" The tears he locks away from his eyes can be heard in his voice.

OOC: Fantastic update, John. When I saw 7 updates to your most recent move, I thought I was falling behind at an astronomical rate. :)

Will he forgive me?

By Sharon
who plays Madelyn
[Edit]

Madelyn spots Rolf making his way towards her, and her heart warms, she quickly wipes the tears from her face. Despite his disappearance earlier in her time of need, that was just selfishness on her behalf. She manages a smile; that is until his question …

"Is it true? Did you slay that doghead back in the swamp?"

The smile quickly fades from her face he didn’t know, he hadn’t guessed, what is she to say to him, the thoughts race through her mind, and her lips move before she is able to get some words out to him.

"Rolf, I am so sorry", hardly able to look him in the eye, but fighting the will to turn away, "I was so confused". A long pause, as she tries to regain her composure through yet more sobs, "Please can you forgive me, I have told the truth, and have accepted my penance".

She wants desperately for him to hold her, to tell her that all will be OK, that he will be there for her. It is only now when all is out in the open, when she has actually faced what she has done and accepted penance for it, that she realises her true feelings for Rolf, what he means to her, what she would like to mean to him. Will he ever be able to forgive her?

Why?

By Brad
who plays Rolf
[Edit]

Rolf looks deeply into Madelyn's troubled eyes. And what now? How could he forgive her betrayel, and should he? He'd come to lean heavily on her and now he felt as though he were on quicksand. And what of Sir Richard? He'd trusted Rolf to carry his honor and Rolf trusted Madelyn, so her actions had not only brought her honor into question, but his and Sir Richards as well.

And what of battle? How could he face what was to the fore if he wasn't sure of what was to the rear? She'd proven trustworthy aside from that one time. Or had she? What else might she have done which has not yet been brought into the harsh light of day? Still, who of us is without some mistakes in our past, things of which we are ashamed? And who else could face such a gathering and admit to such things? And perhaps he should shoulder more of the blame as well. He'd depended on her greatly and she had oaths and vows aplenty to weigh upon her.

His eyes soften, but remain guarded. Finally, he finds his voice. It's low and troubled yet, "Truth and penance you've sought and received and for that, I am glad. But before I can forgive, before I can again trust, I must understand why, and why you could not speak of this dishonor to me before."

A Squire

By lechrist
who plays Elsbeth
[Edit]

Elsbeth accepts her honor, standing with her head held high, tears of joy in her eyes. To be related to a great family was one thing- to be honored so, among those not of her people, is much different. She feels as if her heart will pound free of her breast with the joy of the moment.

As Callum is honored, she looks at the wild warrior, the one who had frightened and fascinated her so at the beginning of this journey. She wonders if she will ever learn to understand him. She desperately wants to, for to understand such as him would be to understand her people's past- and her own.

Then, as the pact is made with the giant, the woman can only smile to herself. T'was not the pact she would have made, yet it was not the war some others required. It was a compromise, the best kind of pact. With many so diverse in their ways, a compromise was the most elegant of solutions.

Which led her to Madelyn's plight.

As the other woman accepts her punishment, Elsbeth can only try not to cry at the sight. After all, she had known all along what Madelyn had done. Indeed, she had lied about it to Rolf, a fact he must now be realizing. She idly wonders if the Warder made Constable will ever trust her again.

Or if she will ever trust herself.

Elsbeth wishes nothing more than to comfort the other woman in her grief. Yet, she holds back. Instead, Elsbeth stands at the foot of the hill, long after others have departed. For a long moment she feels as alone as Madelyn must feel, unsure which group she should go with. Indeed, she hopes that the road is in her future, for how could she simply go home to house and a possible husband now that she was a Squire and a wanderer?

Yes John, that is a broad hope that this is only the end of a chapter and not the end of the story! :)

Medals all round

By Skald

[Edit]

Edgar watches the preparations for battle with a sinking heart, for he would not see the Giant slain. Indeed, had he not pledged his word to Rolf, he would have flown off to urge the Giant to flee ... so it is with great relief that the expected confrontation ends with a handshake, not bloodshed, and he nods quietly, perhaps seeing for himself just why the Warden is pledged to this man Richard Briganda ...

The ceremony that follows on the next day, is of lesser interest to him, though he shares in his companions' pleasure at their appointments, even if the nature of the titles and offices bestowen mean little. And indeed he inclines his head respectfully as Mandrake is rewarded and the Earl, perhaps kindly, expresses the wish to converse. Madelyn's penance, however both perplexes and intrigues him, though he keeps his beak firmly shut, mindful of the earlier problems in the village, and casts a warning glance at Yuri to do the same. He does pass one comment to Mandrake, however. "This Order must mean a lot to her," he says, the puzzlement in his voice overcome with a growing urge to understand why.

Callum bows as he is honoured. "A bard's tale is more honour than I hoped for, Lord. If you're having need of me, I'll be happy to be lending my sword to your cause."

He steps back and listens to the rest of the plaudits and then with growing puzzlement at Madelyn's confession and penance. He edges over towards Mandrake and stoops down. "Your heraldship," he begins, mischievously tugging his forelock, "what's all the greeting about. It's not as if I wasn't after killing it myself. It was only a doghead, forbye?"

OOC: To avoid confusion, "Greeting" is here being used with it's Scots meaning of crying or sobbing.

I am truly sorry

By Sharon

Madelyn stands and fights to hold Rolf’s deep gaze, she can see him emotionally questioning himself.

"Truth and penance you've sought and received and for that, I am glad. But before I can forgive, before I can again trust, I must understand why, and why you could not speak of this dishonour to me before."

"I am truly sorry Rolf", her voice is weak, but she manages to get the words out coherently, "my action was caused by confusion, by mixed emotions. I do not wish to make excuses for my behaviour, because there is no doubt that what I did was wrong". She pauses for a long moment before continuing, " I have strong feelings for you Rolf, feelings that have run deep since first I laid eyes on you aboard The Midnight Sky. I am not used to feeling this way, and had problems controlling those emotions. I could not speak to you of this, as not only was I confused at what I was feeling, but you had burdens of your own, and did not need me to add to your weight. I am truly ashamed of what I have done, and deserve much less than what has been given. But with that said, I will wear this black rag, and I will serve my penance, and I will prove once more that I can be loyal and trusted. I made a mistake, and for that I am truly sorry!"

Casual contemplation

By Dogowar
who plays Ravn
[Edit]

The runes had spoken truthfully. Indeed a change, indeed a new beginning! This Earl Richard is clearly not a man of the old ways. Compromises with giants? A wise decision, maybe, but definitely not one Thor’s followers would neither recommend nor be able to honour for any length of time. No wonder that hammer-priest sought his quests elsewhere.

Ravn shakes his head with a surpressed smile at the thought of what his mentor’s inevitable reaction would have been to what he has just witnessed these last few days. Norse and wildmen united! Villages named after the dead! Men strutting silver brooches like women in new dresses! Women wearing swords and saluted as warriors at men’s gatherings! By Odin’s Eye! The old fellow would have had a thunderstroke! He giggles to himself at the thought, quickly sombering as yet another crowd of warriors make their way rather noisily from the finished ceremony past him toward the longtables. Ravn scouts the crowd for the newly appointed Constable in their midst but does not find him there. Now, that’s odd - would not a brave man so recently honoured be with his peers and telling tall tales of his endeavours for as long as there would be ale and merriment?

Puzzled, Ravn leaves the hubbub of the celebrations and finds himself straying by the hill where the penance trial was held. He ponders the trial ceremony, not recognizing it from his mentor’s teachings. The shield maiden was apparently being punished for slaying a captive monster that had failed to comply with its captor’s command. Why do these people consider that a crime? These lands are, indeed, changing and its peoples with them. For the better or the worse, who’s to tell?

Suddenly, his thoughts are interrupted by the sound of flapping wings and he looks up to see the familiar shape of the black crow pass over the threesome gathered on the otherwise abandoned hill; the Constable and the shield maiden at the top, the druidess at the foot. He pauses where he stands, leaning on his spear, for now keeping his distance. Thoughtfully, he trails the flight of the crow as it circles the hill a few times before taking off inland, its black figure fading against the greyish background of the slowly gathering clouds over the rugged hills.

Abandoning for now his contemplations on the ways of the Galinians, he returns to brewing on the verse that has been haunting homelessly his mind since he cast the runes. The words shape in his mind, slowly forcing the realization upon him. ODIN! That’s it! Such wicked wenches, the Norns! He climbs the hill with a determined stride, heading directly for the two figures at the top...

Interruption

By Dogowar
who plays Ravn
[Edit]

"Good Constable! Good..er.." Ravn looks at the young woman, "..maiden!" He cannot hide a trace of a satisfied smile at having found a (at least nearly) suitable phrase. By all the Valkyries, how DOES one address a woman who has taken up arms? He continues: "I am Ravn Ashengrey, runecaster of the old ways, learnéd in the teachings of the One-Eyed Wanderer." He pauses briefly. "Forgive my intrusion upon your private moment, but the runes have bid me come to this place and tell of their answer if you will hear it. Will you?"

Elsbeth watches the pair on the hill, her hand straying to the great wolf at her heels, her green dress moving slightly in the small breeze. She does not need to be able to read lips to tell that what Madelyn says to Rolf is serious.

For a brief moment, the woman feels a pang in her heart. She cannot help but feel that the Gods are right in bringing those two to some understanding. After all, they are of the same people. She is not of them, despite a bright clasp and and a new title.

Her reverie is interupted by the appearance of the stranger. Her eyes quickly take in his appearance: a warrior, a Norseman. As she tenses she feels Laddie tense beside her.

Making a concerted effort, she removes her hand from where it had strayed to her weapon. Surely he was one of the Lord's men? Shaking her head at her own frailities, Elsbeth continues to watch the drama on the hill...

Madelyn is shocked and taken aback by the stranger’s intrusion. She has just told her deepest darkest secret, and this person has invaded their personal privacy. In a mixed flood of emotions, her hand moves to the hilt of her sword, she wants to hit him, to dispose of him, but then realising her error, her emotions quickly change and removing her hand, she wants to run, to flee, to take back what she has just told Rolf and get away from everything.

Despite this strong urge to flee, she stays put, looking from Rolf to the stranger, back to Rolf before collapsing to the floor in yet another flood of tears. It is only at this point that she catches sight of Elsbeth at the base of the mound. Her eyes reach out to the younger woman, that has been there so many times for her.

Watching from the bottom of the hill, Elsbeth sees the Madelyn react to the stranger's appearance with first anger, then with tears. She sees the look sent her way and reacts without thought, lifting her dress with one hand while striding up the hill determinedly.

The druid stops short of the trio, quickly trying to figure out what happened. Her eyes look up at the stranger, then at Rolf, finally then at Madelyn. She drops to her knees beside the other woman, her arm going around her.

"What did you say to her?" she asks the stranger accusingly, looking up with angry eyes.

He feels Madelyn's stiffness and shares it himself, wanting to reach some sort of understanding with Madelyn. The past problems need to be dealt with so that the mind is free to look ahead. He sighs and does his best to put his irritation behind him, and with surprising success, testament to his own unsurity as to how to proceed.

"Peace, Elsbeth. Master Ashengrey has done nothing save interrupt a conversation long overdue." Turning to the newcomer, Rolf makes introductions before addressing the mans question.

"Though I am caught up in matters of the moment, I would hear of the answers of the runes. Might I impose on your patience for some little time while the lady and I finish our discussion or are the words of the runes a matter of urgency?"

Ravn's bafflement is evident as he stares in disbelief at the girl having a nervous breakdown. He had not expected this reaction, nor had he expected the woman from the foot of the hill to come rushing like that, snapping at him like a wolf. ODIN! She's got a wolf!!?! He tries very hard to ignore the sound of the crow screeching above as it makes another pass overhead. A storm brewing, indeed! As if he didn't know... He gathers himself and tries to untangle things as best he can, turning his attention first toward the enfuriated woman with the rather sizeable pet.

"Good lady, I was merely introducing myself when the maiden fell into a fit of some sort." Ravn's attempts at being apologetic are severely hampered by the crow circling above. "I may have chosen the worst moment for my appearance and, by Odin, had I known that this would be the result I would have held my peace."

He pulls at his thin beard in obvious frustration and silently curses himself for following his impetuous impulse. This is truly a test of wisdom and patience. Praise the gods that the Constable appears to have a ruly temper!

"Good lady, Noble Constable, for now I shall take my leave with your pardon. Know that it was never my intention to cause anger or grief, but my presence will not speed any bettering. Still, the gods willed me here and of this we must speak when the girl has regained her composture." He points at the crow still circling above. "Where the crow flies you will find me."

With this he leaves the hill, heading for the beach.

A talk interrupted

Rolf nods politely to the man as he takes his leave. Sighing, he turns back to Madelyn, but words die on his lips as he realizes that he and Madelyn are still not alone. He pauses, considering. "Apologies and amends have been made and accepted Madelyn, let us put that behind us. Burdens I have aplenty, far more than I'd ever wish. But the well being of my companions is one duty I accept freely regardless of any charge laied upon me. So please do not let such concerns hold you silent in the future. Such secrets are a pox, growing the worse when left hidden."

He pauses again. Reaching out, he takes Madelyn's hand in his own. "As for the rest..." He looks at Madelyn and risks a small, somewhat child-like smile, "As for the rest, it is a path I will enjoy exploring." Again, Rolf becomes aware of Elsbeth's presence and feels uncomfortably exposed.

Elsbeth merely nods at the stranger, noting his manners, noting also... a crow? She was too close to nature not to notice that the crow was no coincidence. She swallows hard, gathering her temper, her arm still protectively around Madelyn.

Then, as Rolf speaks and Elsbeth herself sees the seriousness in his eyes, she realizes that she might be one too many here. She feels the color come to her face as Rolf himself looks uncomfortable, then feels her heart ache in her breast as she realizes what it means.

"Be strong, Marva," she whispers to herself. She squeezes Madelyn and lightly kisses her head. "If you be needing me, you can be finding me," she tells her softly. She stands and looks at Rolf. "I've... I've things I've got to be doing," she tells him hastily. Then, quickly as she came, she goes. Unconsciously, her feet are taking her toward the same water's edge that the stranger departed for but moments ago...

The pact with the giant interests Yuri little, but the fact that the dogheads have survived does not escape him, and he glares angrily at the gateway for a long time after the compromise is reached before making his way back to the encampment, his jaw clenched.

The rewards also interest Yuri little, he could not understand why people put such high value on such trinkets or titles, tho it does give him cause to pause in contemplation of what will happen to the little troupe he has found himself part of.

Like Callum, Yuri sees little reason why one would hold anything but joy for the death of a doghead. However the little knowledge Yuri has of a Paladin's code gives him some insight into why one would morn the killing one in such a fashion so. Personally he doesn't understand it, but at least he knows why they feel it is so bad.

Later, as Madelyn and Rolf talk atop the hill, Yuri's approach to Elsbeth where she stands waiting at the bottom of the hill is spoilt when she goes racing off to what she undoubtably feels is Madelyn's defence. So, instead of having any conversation, Yuri takes Elsbeth's place, watching from the bottom of the hill before he shrugs his shoulders and wanders away.

His fingers examine the smoothness of the stone, feeling for any imperfections, but his thoughts are still on that hill. The picture of that chaotic moment, the girl sobbing at his feet, the angry woman with the snarling wolf, the warrior’s polite suggestion to meet another time, his own hasty exit. And Uddhugg’s pestering behavior, blast that curséd fowl!! Come to think of it, where IS that feathered pestilence? He looks about him but the crow is nowhere to be seen. And good riddance!!! He tries to calm himself with the view of clouds drifting slowly across the blue afternoon sky, but his old mentor’s words ring in his ear, unforgiving, pounding his shamefulness and frustration like a hammer.

"Too much speaks the never silent

with words of no meaning

hasty tongue not held in leash

often speaks itself into sorrow"

He can almost feel the old man’s knubby cane on his head even now. Had he but waited for them to finish their talk..! His fingers find a crack in the stone and he discards it, sending it skipping across the loch’s surface. And what now..? The maiden had almost drawn her blade on him and he would have had to.. Had to do what, exactly? What could he have done??!? And which moonstruck baffoon put a blade in such a brittle creature’s hand, anyway??!? True, not every female is made to hold the keys and hearth, and some are even set for higher things like the völvar and other wise women, but this is ridiculous! Outright irresponsible!! He feels his anger bubbling dangerously near the rim and takes a seat on a stranded log by the water, closing his eyes to focus on the clucking of the gentle waves as they wash in between the rocks. Calm...

"If you be needing me, you can be finding me,"

Madelyn smiles as Elsbeth kisses her forehead, and releases the young woman’s hand to let her go, before returning her attention to Rolf. Wiping the tears from her face once more, she is slightly flushed, but this time through happiness, than through anything worse. "And I too will enjoy exploring the path with you …", she pauses before playfully adding with a grin, "… Constable Rolf".

She freezes, as if wanting to do something, but not sure if it is the right thing to do, before stepping forward. She puts her arms around Rolf’s waist and rests her head gently on his shoulder, squeezing tight, she says, "thank you, for understanding, and I hope we can find sometime alone to discuss this further, but that is proving difficult at the moment!". Letting him go, she steps back, "come we are needed, now where did that man go?" She puts her arm through his, and heads off in the direction Ravn went.

Elsbeth walks to the water's edge, some distance from the stranger. For a long moment she simply stands, gazing over the water, her eyes focused on nothing. Then, she removes her shoes and sits, dangling her feet in the water.

The woman sighs, idly playing with her hair. Then, she begins to sing. Her voice is soft and gentle, soft enough to not be heard unless one were standing next to her. It is a sad sounding song, the words in her native tongue. Elsbeth's eyes are closed, the wolf beside her looking at her with curiousity as her song drifts over the waters before her.

Yuri surveys the area, spotting his travelling partners dotted about the encampment. A small wry smile spreads accross Yuri's lips.

However being alone was not something Yuri was used to, or particularly enjoyed, he was going to have to something about this, and not just for himself.

Spying Elsbeth alone once more, Yuri decides to try his luck another time, and makes his way over to her. However, as he approaches he realises she is singing to herself and so deliberately quietens his footsteps as to (try to) not disturb or interrupt.

He quietly listens to her singing, taking in the melody as he waits for an opportune moment too gently interrupt.

"That was very good", he encourages, adding a smile for good measure, "a copper for your thoughts?"

Looking out accross the water and then down at Elsbeth's toes as she wriggles them in the water, Yuri quietly replies.

"No... it's not really very funny. Being alone is a dreadful state to suffer. But fortunately, as much as you may sometimes feel alone, or wish to be, you're not. With friends and family that care about you so, I doubt you ever will be...", Yuri's voice fades out as he finishes his sentence.

"Isn't the water cold?", Yuri abruptly enquires as he looks up.

Of views and visions

By Dogowar

Relaxed, Ravn turns as he sees the young woman with the wolf coming down to the shore a bit from where he is sitting. He studies her as she stands there, the breeze playing in her hair, and the gracious movement as she splashes one foot in the water takes him somewhat aback. Freja has been kind to this one, he thinks to himself as the side of her garment slides a little to reveal a softly curving line of tan against the green fabric. He leans back on the log and folds his hands behind his head to enjoy the outlook some more. Her lips are moving, ever so gently, as if in conversation with some invisible spirit, soft lines shaping silent words that fly on the gentle breeze across the loch to some unknown destination on the other side. A feast for the eyes, indeed.

His line of sight is interrupted by Madelyn and Rolf joining him on the shore. He abandons any effort to retain his satisfied look in favor of his usual sinister visage. In this he is helped by Madelyn’s outstretched hand, a man’s gesture, that baffles him to the point of raising one eyebrow in ill-concealed surprise. Have these Galinian settlers abandoned ALL custom? Taking her hand, he gets up from the log and clears his throat before replying.

"A-hemm.. Maiden, I am the one who should apologize for imposing myself in such ungentle manner."

Turning to Rolf, he continues:

"Constable, you are wise to heed the runes, for they speak the will of the gods. Very well, hear then what the runes answered!"

His voice softens into a melodious chant.

"What one eye misses the other sees

a new dawn is a new beginning

perfection takes leave

through fire and ice

a brush of thorns

to glory and redemption"

There is a brief silence as the words drop like falling leaves into the listeners’ minds. Then, very softly, he asks them in an almost whispering voice:

"Do you understand their meaning or should I explain?"

Jolly's arrival is an annoying distraction, and the raven turns crossly towards the parrot, his eyes dark, though the presence of that big beak forestalls any overly angry rejoinder.

Peter listens with pleasure and, most uncharacteristically, cheers loudly as he listens to Richard Briganda's speech. He even jumps up and down with pleasure when Rolf and then Elsbeth's elevetions are anounced. He is clearly a man beside himself with pleasure at his friends success.

As Mandrake is offer of the role of Herald, Peter heads over to him and pats him on the back, trying to shake his hand, in congratulation.

When the offer of his own post is read out he quietens down a lot and starts to go red. As every one turns to look at him for his 15 seconds of fame he manages to splutter, "Thank you, Thank you," to Briganda and bobs his head up and down enthusiastically.

He continues to remain cheerful but more subdued all the way through the rest of the awards and appointments, and is looking forward eagerly to Madelyn's reward at the hands of Lord Forkbead. However, he quickly realises that something is wrong when he hears the tone and formality of Forkbeards words. He listens somberly as Forkbeard presents Madelyn's offences and then the penance she must serve. Inwardly he vows that he will try to ease the burden, if he can, of the female warrior who has been so solid for them so far.

At the end of the ceremony Peter watches as Rolf, the stranger and Elsbeth all speak with Madelyn, and decided that he will only make things worse if he were to join them.

He turns back to the main group and determines to mingle and enjoy his new found status as much as he can ...

Words of the runes

By Brad
who plays Rolf
[Edit]

Rolf nods sagely, doing his best to carve the words of the runes upon his mind. He let's them dance behind his eyes, letting his mind play upon meanings both dire and whimsical.

"What one eye misses, the other sees...."

What one person sees that another overlooks? Or maybe that's too literal, perhaps the sun and moon. Something that is seen only under the light of one or the other.

"A new dawn is a new beginning...."

Well, surely this dawn is a new beginning for us all. We've completed the first task set for us and now we look forward, to the new tasks given us.

"Perfection takes leave...."

That which was perfect is now flawed? Something perfect has fled? A nagging pull at his thoughts call to Madelyn, but he pushes that aside as ungracious.

"Through fire and ice...."

As perfection leaves, it passes through troubles dire portents?

"A brush of thorns...."

Another reference to problems encountered. Perhaps smaller problems amidst larger ones?

"To glory and redemption."

Again, his thoughts are drawn to Madelyn's plight. Her calling is one that strives to perfection, though she has recently passed through a rough patch, but now she's reached a new beginning with her feet on the path of perfection, a path that will be leading through challenges great and small, but that she will pass through them into glory.

The interpretation seems fitting to him, though he tries to set it aside and let other interpretations come to the fore. Unfortunately, now that his mind has grasped the idea, he is unable to explore other paths.

"Master Ashengrey, I thank you for the words of the runes. Though I think I might understand their meaning, I would have your explaination as well, if you will be so kind."

She sighs. "But I'm thinking you know more than anyone th' feeling of having the crowd yet being alone."

Elsbeth pats Yuri's arm with a ruefull smile. "Here you are more alone than anyone else and I'm prattling on about loneliness!" She shakes her head. "Forgive me."

Of runic meanings

By Dogowar

"Better burden bears no man than much man’s wisdom."

Ravn smiles at them both.

"You are wise to ask my interpretation, for the runes are but echoes of voices from beyond, answers to the questions that we ask."

He raises a lecturing index finger.

"Know this: To understand an answer one must know the question. The question I asked was one for myself, namely this: Which path must I follow? Which sacrifice must I make? Remember, the Alfather gave his right eye to Mimer’s Well that it should see from below what the left would not from above. So, too, must we who seek to see beyond the evident."

He turns to Rolf, laying one hand on his shoulder.

"Lord Constable, I have read the daybreak, a new beginning, as are these lands and you. I have read fire and ice, conflicts and opposites, like our liege’s alliance with the Celts and this maiden taking up manly ways of war to join your hird. I have read travelers tied to the land like you yourself, Lord Constable, must roam and still remain. I have read many obstacles and great rewards."

He looks at Madelyn, speaking himself into an ever more agitated state by every syllable.

"You are, too, a new beginning, for you are not of the old ways. You are one whom perfection has abandoned, a seeker of redemption. You are the traveler that will return. You are the trolled rune of Thurs, the thorn turned upside down, the eager rune that escaped its confines and willed itself into the world."

He pauses to breathe and then continues in a less dramatic tone, addressing them both:

"So the meaning is this: I must accompany you, shield maiden, and you, Lord Constable, on your journeys from this moment of beginnings, through fire and ice and mortal danger, to your moment of glory and redemption. There I shall find enlightenment, for such is my fate, my destiny, my örlog. Will you share your fates with mine?"

He smiles, but the sadness shows through as he recalls a family that no longer lives, "my family didn't exactly appreciate me vanishing for days, weeks and months on end when barely in my second decade of life."

Yuri pauses, momentarily distracted has Ravn's speaking becomes more enthusiastic.

"But forgive you? Nay, Elsbeth, I was about to thank you, for in talking to you, I no longer feel so alone."

Shrugging, Yuri adds, "maybe misery does indeed like company."

Rolf considers the words of Ravn and considers his answer carefully. After all of the honors bestowed upon him, his duty to sir Richard is even more to the fore of his thoughts than ever before. "I thank you for your words of wisdom, Master Ashengrey. But before I answer your question, I caution you thus. We journey in the name of sir Richard Briganda, we are his representatives and as such, we must ward his honor as though it is our own, as indeed it is in part. As preparations are made for battle, Mandrake wonders between the groups, but is drawn to small unorganised gathering of spectators in which Flower and Zona are found.

It is as though a weight is lifted from his heavy heart though, when Briganda declares that there will be no fighting this day, that an agreement has been made with Manna. With an audible sigh of relief he says to Edgar "These are the actions of one who would build a new world, and a world built on such foundations will always outlast one built on conquest alone.

"The tension has quite dried my throat though, let us see if we can persuade one of these wonderful ladies to liberate something." He says turning with a smile and a deep bow, not quite sudden enough to topple his friend.

As Briganda confers the honour upon Mandrake, he is at least as surprised as Jensen and Segovax, almost speechless and glad that he has a beard covering a great deal of his now flushing face.

He just about recovers his composure enough to say a few words though, "It is indeed a great and an unexpected honour my liege and if I might be permitted, then I would like to say a few words.

"In the matter of temperance and even-handedness, I like to think that this is true of myself, though perhaps not in all matters; I’m afraid that when it comes to the ale horn and the spit roast I show no mercy." This he punctuates by puffing out his stomach even further and patting it.

"In truth though, these virtues are birth given or soon learned by most people of my race, it is a matter of necessity when you are of such stature."

Mandrake then coughs and looks a little nervous, "I’m afraid that I am not practiced in the ways of such esteemed human folks as are gathered here, especially as we are blessed with many culture gathered in friendship.

"Also, I know little of the duties of the office that I am bestowed, so I apologise if my actions offend or break with protocol, but I would like to make my first declaration now."

He clears his throat again and then continues "Many will have heard of Edgar, my talking raven (ooc: sorry, can’t remember if it’s crow or raven ;-) as I have heard him referred to many time. Well firstly, let me put the records straight on this count, Edgar is not ‘mine’, he is a free spirit as are we all, though he has a good heart and has never, nor I think, would ever object when people talk thus.

"Secondly, I would like word spread to all who are friends and allies to lords Briganda, Jensen and Segovax, that Edgar is my friend and should not be fired upon with arrow nor sling shot."

Again, Mandrake pauses, this time looking about the gathered crowd until something seems to catch his eyes, at which point he strides forward to one of the young ladies. Bowing deeply he addresses her "If I might be so bold, Mandrake Underroot, Herald to Richard Briganda would be indebted to you if you would surrender to me that pretty red ribbon from your hair."

Returning to stand besides the Earl he addresses the crowd again "Let it be known that my friend can be marked out by the red ribbon that he wears."

Explanations

By Daren
who plays Mandrake
[Edit]

As he listens to the rest of the proceedings, Edgar asks "This Order must mean a lot to her," he says, the puzzlement in his voice overcome with a growing urge to understand why.

And whilst Mandrake is thinking of some way to explain such things to him, Callum breaks his line of thought momentarily "Your heraldship," he begins, mischievously tugging his forelock, "what's all the greeting about. It's not as if I wasn't after killing it myself. It was only a doghead, forbye?"

Mandrake smiles back at the barbarian’s actions and then responds firstly to Callum, "I don’t know much of your culture, but from what I do know, and from your own behaviour, I would say that honour is of serious concern to your people, and oath breaking would be a terrible act.

"Well, that is what Madelyn has done, twice over in fact. Though she swore no oath to the doghead, by the way in which her Order lives when it surrendered to us then became not only it’s captor but also it’s protector, sworn to do so by the vows she took.

"Her first oath broken was to the doghead in killing it as a captive. He second oath broken was the one to her brethren, her oath to uphold the laws and virtues of her order."

That was the easy part, now to explain to Edgar. "I am told, and unless you put me straight then I have no reason to believe that it is otherwise, that a bird bonds to whatever it sees soon after it breaks free from the egg. So is it also with many people.

"People can have two families, two hatchings if you like. Firstly, there is their birth family, the nest mates and parent, even grandparents, all of whom care for the new and growing child, even adult.

"Many then have a second hatching, into a new family, a family that are bound together not necessarily through blood ties, but through shared beliefs and these family members help each other in similar ways.

"I don’t know if this helps, but it is the best way that I can think of to explain it now, my mind overworked today.

"In the lands of mortal man there are lords and lieges everywhere. One man rules an empire, another a humble home. Who of them is the greater ruler? Should you honor less your supper host than you would a king of thousands?"

Ravn stands his spear upright between them, the sign of his allegiance. Or lack of same.

"I know the true Lords of Men and they know me. There is but one law: Earn your place in Valhalla or condem yourself to the sickly realms of Hel. Be truthful and be brave! There is but one ruler: ODIN!"

He speaks the last word with steelfast conviction. The hardness of his voice is underlined by the way he thuds the butt end of the spear into the ground. On a less harsh note he continues.

"I have no mortal lord to whom I swear fealty. I know your Earl to be a brave man of sound ideals, and as such he has my arm to count on."

His hand touches his sword hilt.

"But I have not come to do Earl Richard's bidding in Odin's land. I have come to do Odin's bidding in Earl Richard's land!"

Ravn raises his eyes to the sky briefly, dropping them like an executioner's sword again to focus on Rolf.

"Follow your örlog, Constable, to Hel or to Ragnarök or whereever the Norns will have you. I ask again: Will you share your fate with mine?"

In a voice both calm and determined, Rolf gives his answer. "Aye Ashengrey, you may share our fate. But know this, should you prove false to us or our mission, by my blade you will stand before the Norns lest Odin himself stay my hand."

Birds ...

By JohnB
[Edit]

Mandrake seeming covered with birds, looks like a small and very ineffective scare crow.

All three birds caw and squark almost in rotation. The wing flapping and startling bobbing movements must make it very uncomfortablle for Mandrake.

Ravn gives Rolf a stern frown, a look of disbelief mixed with disapproval.

"What are snowdrops to one who yearns for winter’s end? What are tidings of trial to one eager to prove himself? Did you think yourself at the end of your test, Lord Constable? Can you not feel the gaze of Odin upon your deeds? This is but the beginning! This is Heimdal’s horn resounding, calling us to mighty deeds!"

He turns to face inland, spreading his arms as if embracing it all.

"These virgin lands are yours for the taking!"

He turns to regard Rolf again, noticing for the first time Rolf's pendant.

"...but they will not give themselves without effort, as every farmer knows!"

He look at Madelyn, then back at Rolf, his voice softening again as he realizes that his vision has been once more affirmed.

"But you are the ones whom I must trail, not the other way around, and it is not for me to steer your path lest it be diverted. You have entrusted me, and I shall not falter. As for your Lord I sense he is also your friend, and it is said of friends:

A friend shall be friend to friend

to him and his friend

but enemy’s friend

shall no man ever befriend

So I shall be your friend and the friend of your friends and your enemies' enemy. Such is Odin's law."

Bird brains

Mandrake's pronouncments and gesture stirs strange, hitherto unknown feelings within Edgar ... but then, this would be the first friend he'd ever had so perhaps he can be forgiven for not recognising what marks an end to what had been previously a more selfish outlook.

That, and the sentiment behind the giving of the ribbon overcome any objections the raven might have in being so garishly marked out, for he finds he has come to rely on his gnomish companion, in this, and in many other ways.

And so he wears the ribbon with pride.

As Mandrake attempts to explain what Madelyn's religion means to her, he listens closely, and his annoyance is obvious when his questions are interrupted by the arrival of first the crow and then the parrot atop the unfortunate perch, and the noisy ruckus that ensues.

And again ...

By JohnB
[Edit]

Suddenly the parrot launches itself from Mandrake's head and flies around him a couple of times squawking loudly, then lands on Mandrake's head again.

Again, Mandrake recognises the power behind those talons as it settles on to its perch.

"Edgar, my head would be splitting if this parrot's claws were not holding it together, can you ask your friends to leave please?"

If they do not listen to Edgar, then Mandrake replies "Leave it to me then, and please don't be alarmed."

Mandrake utters a few words in a language almost forgotten and gestures, and then from a gap in the crowds an ocelot appears at bounds over towards him, pointed ears and eyes fixed on the parrot and crow.

Ocelot ....

By JohnB
[Edit]

Suddenly an ocelot squeezes between two people and leaps straight for the birds sitting on Mandrake. A few members of the crowd shout or scream, while pointing at the animal. One brave soul even takes a pace or two towards it, in an attempt to grab it, but its long gone by the time he gets there.

Leaping unwards and upwards it seems as if the birds are doomed.

Jolly squarks and leaps to the air, digging a claw into Mandrake's head in the process. It draws blood but not enough to cause any real damage, however Mandrake jumps slightly from the sudden pain. Jolly merely circles a couple of times and then lands on the edge of some tenting a few feet away, out of reach of both Mandrake and any ocelot, before settling down to watch how things pan out.

OOC I want saving throws (Vs spells) from both Edgar and the Crow - Edgar gets a +2 bonus because of Mandrake's warning - but no more as it was fairly cryptic.

OOC2 Everyone else who is close by can make a save as well - That spell has a HUGE area of effect :)

Standing nearby, Peter is amused by the birds adoption of Mandrake as a roosting pole, and is smiling quietly to himself when an ocelot appears from the crowd and leaps towards Mandrake.

He gasps and starts forward to help, but then realises that he is likely to be of least help in this company, so settles down again to watch the outcome.

"Caw, caw, croak, croak, caw, sqwaawk, caw, caw..."

Mandrake's discomfort at having become a crow's nest is obviously being completely ignored by the one-eyed crow. Then, at the appearance of the phantasmal feline, the crow jumps a foot in the air, surprised to the point of horror.

"SQWUAAAAAAAK!!! CAW, CAW, CA-HAAAW!!"

With an ear-splitting caw and a frantic flutter of black wings he takes off, flapping mad evasive maneuvers between tents and servants carrying plates and empty mugs.

Mandrake sees the alarm that his actions are causing in some quarters and raises his hands "Hold friends, just a little illusion to keep the flocks from settling on this perch.

"Please don’t be alarmed, but if none object, I’ll keep it around whilst there are so many homeless birds."

Then Mandrake takes a kerchief and dabs at the wounds on his head.

Ravn pauses for a moment for a suitable response, smiling as he finds it.

"You ask me of my skills, Constable, and your eyes do not betray you. I prefer the spear for it is a token of my stature, but the scramasax was given to me at my birth, covered in my father’s blood, and in his name I shall wield it. I fear not the bloodied ground, for it is the way to Valhalla. Still, no man can make his way by strife alone, though many try. I am an accomplished sea-farer as should be any man worth his blood, and I can handle a horse pretty well if need be."

The look on Ravn's face is one of certifiable self-confidence, changing to sinister sincerity as he continues.

"But it is of the rune-power that you wish to know, is it not? Know this of the runes:

Know how to carve them

Know how to read them

Know how to bend them

Know how to test them

Know how to pray them

Know how to hallow them

Know how to send them

Know how to erase them!"

His fingers trace movements in mid-air, drawing rapid edged lines and finishing with a wiping maneuver.

"All this I know. I know the twenty-four of ancient mystery. I know the twenty-eight of our forefathers’ tombs. I know the sixteen of idle scribble. And I know the two secret runes of Odin himself! I know of carving them in water, fire, stone, or wind, I know how to carve them in blood. How did I get this knowledge, you wonder?"

Now he is getting definitely gloomy, raising his arms above his head and chanting boomingly.

"I know I hung on windswept tree

whole nights nine

spear-wounded and hallowed to Odin

myself hallowed to myself

on the tree that noone knows

of which roots had sprung

no hand passed me bread nor horn

down I turned my eye, picked up the runes

up a-shouting, fell down again..."

The picture of the Alfather vividly being portrayed slowly fades from the retina. He sure can tell a tale!

"The rune-power is a power beyond the gods’ power. It is what gives the gods their power. It is the sap of the Yggdrasil, and it will not be bent beyond your örlog. But it will willingly support your fate if you live it bravely.

Enough of my skills, I will not be spoken to or about like a thrall on sale. We should take our seats forthwith at the Earl’s table and await the proper time to receive our tasks."

His avalanche of words is interrupted, or perhaps underlined, by the confused one-eyed crow making a crash landing in the bushes.

OOC: A Natural 20 ! ;>

Edgar is not at all sorry when Mandrake's illusion scares away the crow and the parrot.

"Sorry about that," he says to the gnome, "they have no manners ..."

"Very impressive," the raven continues, peering down at the ocelot, "you will have to show me how you did that."

Straightening up again, he turns back towards his friend, his voice lowered "One thing though - the crow spoke of "the Crow Kings", who would appear to have sent it to watch this Ravn ... have you heard aught of such creatures ?"

Shrugging, Yuri adds, "maybe misery does indeed like company."

Elsbeth smiles gently. "I'm not knowing if it is misery, but aye, you can talk to me anytime." She pats him on the shoulder. "You're a good lad, Yuri."

She looks up the commotion with the birds. Seeing the ocelot, she rises to her feet in alarm. "Where in the name of the Gods...?" she begins, her mind racing to try and remember if any of the delegations had been carrying such with them.

Smiles while his eyes crease in puzzlement as he is called a 'lad'. "I don't think I've ever been described as a good l..."

Yuri turns around where he sits to look at what has startled Elsbeth so, as he is evidently oblivious to the goings on. Fortunately Mandrake quickly explains the cause of the raucus.

"Mandrake should learn to hold his spells, I'm no master in magic, but one thing I do know is an illusion can kill just as well as a blade. Tho seeing Mandrake trying to explain he didn't mean the birds to keel over with fright would be an amusing sight."

Blinks slowly before rolling his eyes skywards. "Forgive the rhyme."
